令人驚慄的 「木乃伊色」

Mummy Brown (可被翻譯為「木乃伊褐」或 「木乃伊棕」)，是一種極具爭議但歷史上頗為著名的繪畫顏料，源於16世紀歐洲發現大量木乃伊開始，商人逐利用這些當時來說是「廢物」製成的副產物，為流行於16至19世紀之間的顏料。許多歐洲藝術家曾使用這種顏料繪製作品，其中包含浪漫主義和前拉斐爾派的重要畫家。[1], [2]
Mummy Brown (又稱 Egyptian Brown 或 Caput Mortuum），顧名思義，這種顏料是由埃及木乃伊的遺骸（包括人類與動物）研磨製成，混合瀝青、樹脂或沒藥而製成的顏料。這種色調呈現出透明的棕色調，介於熟褐色與生褐色之間，具有良好的透明度與暖色調，營造出獨特的溫潤、天然柔和的陰影，適合表現人肌膚與古典場景，特別在塗抹於陰影、肌膚色與罩染層。[3] 然而，它容易褪色、開裂，化學性不穩定；含有動物脂肪與氨成分，也會影響鄰近顏料的層次品質。 但在當時來說，並沒有其他顏料可以取替。
這種顏料在歐洲文藝復興後期與維多利亞時期尤其受歡迎，被視為風雅卻異國情調的材料。
雖然由於檢測木乃伊成分須破壞畫作，確切證據不多。但研究顯示，可能的早期使用者包括提香（Titian）與林布蘭（Rembrandt）等名畫家，他們偏好這種顏料在油畫罩染中產生的深度與光澤效果。[6]
然而，後來因道德問題，畫家也不願主動表態是否曾採用 Mummy Brown。 但仍有多位藝術史學者普遍認為以下藝術家曾使用 Mummy Brown 在其創作上。
其中最著明的有歐仁·德拉克洛瓦（Eugène Delacroix）的代表作《自由引導人民》（Liberty Leading the People, 1830）。[7]
其次，在愛德華·伯恩-瓊斯（Edward Burne-Jones）的《亞瑟王最後的長眠》（The Last Sleep of Arthur in Avalon, 1881–98）中，也是因運用這種顏料而聞名。
在這幅畫的顏色上，不難看到在正中的建築物正採用疑似 Mummy Brown 的顏料。然而，後來伯恩-瓊斯在得知這種顏料來源後，他將剩餘的以儀式方式埋葬於自家花園以示抗議。[8]
另外，馬丁·德羅林（Martin Drolling）的《廚房的內部》（Interior of a Kitchen, 1815）
也被認為使用該顏料創造溫暖的棕褐色調。[9]
畢竟，現在已經沒有 Mummy Brown 這種顏料了。 停用主要因來源倫理問題、原料稀少與顏料性能不良；其來自磨碎的埃及木乃伊混合瀝青與樹脂，因使用人體遺骸引發道德爭議，加上供應也在20世紀中葉耗盡，同時顏料易變色、透明性與耐久性不穩定，藝術家與供應商逐漸放棄此品項。[10]
